Unity and Diversity in Church History

 This work does not focus on the chronological history of institutions or ideas, but rather on investigating moments of crisis and establishment, moments of revolution and institutionalization. It studies the History of Christianity as a history in which new and diverse ideas continuously test, and even revolutionize, the unity of the Christian church. At the same time, these new ideas become institutionalized within it. In short, it studies the dynamic unity and diversity of the Christian church throughout different eras.

Every crisis and every change, every moment of decline, but also every renewal, every restoration, and every reform signifies the separation of a part of the church and indicates a difference from previous times. The author analyzes this dynamic and seeks the continuity and discontinuity of ideas and institutions to understand it as a struggle for the purity of the church, its community, and its mission in the world.

The author offers a Protestant perspective on the History of Christianity. That is, he seeks to understand how Protestantism connects with ancient and medieval Christianity and with other Christian traditions, and how the dynamic described has generated within Protestantism the diverse confessions and denominations, the different movements and styles. It combines a description of the main lines of Christian history with detailed, short monographs and brief biographies of the most representative phenomena and protagonists that illustrate and explain them, preferably taken from the history of Christianity in Spain.
