When the apostle of Christ wrote 1 Corinthians (some scholars suggest around Passover of 57 AD), God's revelation was still very incomplete. Scholars agree that about 22 of our 27 New Testament books were not written until after 1 Corinthians, including the four Gospels, Romans, and the book of Acts. Viewing the Christian context of the incomplete canon and the purpose of those apostolic gifts in the church then is of supreme importance for understanding this beautiful chapter.
