As men, we live in complicated times where the authenticity of our Christianity is being diluted amidst gender confusion and the virus of passivity. The image of man, his identity, and his purpose have suffered a deterioration that extends from Genesis to the present day. The loss of identity, and therefore of authority, has plunged man into such a state of disorientation that he has become incapacitated to fulfill his mission, turning him, through a whole process that we will analyze, into a sad caricature of the model God planned.
The book is divided into three fundamental axes: Identifying, Defining, Affirming
First, it identifies the problem by analyzing, in different fields of study, the aspects that have contributed to confusing the male identity.
Second, it defines the causes of the current crisis of masculinity, analyzing the social movements that throughout history have been diluting the role of men and their roles.
Third, it affirms the true meaning of what it means to be a man, exposing the characteristics and the model of man proposed by the Bible and Jesus of Nazareth himself, an example of male identity.
“Masculinity is being systematically threatened and men need to reclaim the place God gave them since creation. Books like this should be recommended reading for every man. You will enjoy reading Juan Varela's work because it practically and deeply lays the foundation of what it means to be a man: someone who inspires, leads, guides, and looks to the future with hope and resolution. Read it and live it, I am sure you will want to share it with other men.”
In a society like the 21st Century, where more and more voices are rising affirming that women are self-sufficient and men are no longer necessary, there are increasingly more men who, immersed in an identity crisis, question what masculinity truly consists of, that historically sacred value that so many generations of men jealously guarded for centuries since man became man.
The 21st Century man fears being a man in the face of an increasingly strong and confident woman. We are immersed in a process of feminization of men and masculinization of women. The result is a superficial, selfish, and apathetic model of man, seemingly happy but psychically suffering the loss of a historical place culturally constructed within him over centuries. He appears secure and balanced, publicly asserts that everything is going well for him, but internally lives a serious identity crisis that undermines his values and unbalances his emotions.
Helping men overcome this identity crisis is the challenge that Juan Varela’s current book faces. It seeks to provide answers from a contemporary point of view, but with a distinctly evangelical Christian approach, to an increasingly disturbing question: What is the role of man in the 21st Century?
What is his thesis? “Our manhood is a direct legacy of the image of God in us. We must not deny it, but channel it appropriately; we must not repress it, but direct it within the appropriate ethical framework.”
From a Hispanic perspective, with eloquence and skill, the author combines anthropological research on man with the evangelical Christian proposal, corroborating both with his personal experience, and guiding the reader, step by step, in an analysis and reflection aimed at discovering his authentic and true masculinity, which: DOES matter.
