"The fifth volume of Joel Beeke and Paul Smalley’s Reformed Systematic Theology turns its attention to the doctrines of the Holy Spirit (pneumatology) and salvation (soteriology). We find, among many other significant aspects, a learned defense of the ordo salutis, which sincerely addresses the main objections to this important formulation of classic Protestant soteriology. We encounter a beautiful exposition of the Holy Spirit and the historia salutis, which complements the treatment of the ordo very well. The volume concludes, as expected in a book co-written by Joel Beeke, with a rich summary of the work of the Holy Spirit in the Christian experience of salvation (experientia salutis). I must confess that I immediately went to glance at the section on preparatory grace and also on assurance, knowing Beeke's interest and expertise in those areas. I will use this volume when teaching systematic theology, and I will recommend it to others. I have already learned and benefited greatly from it. It is a welcome addition to the current flourishing of Reformed systematics."
