The first to use the expression "ancient paths" was the prophet Jeremiah, who guaranteed that those who followed them would find "rest for their souls" (Jer. 6:16).
J.C. Ryle had the same conviction, writing: "The older I get, the more convinced I am that the world does not need a new gospel, as some seem to think. I am entirely certain that the world only needs a full, courageous, and uncompromising teaching of the 'ancient paths'."
In this book, Ryle expounds on the great issues of the gospel and demonstrates that, indeed, this is the "good way" where true "rest for the soul" can be found.
