Romans

When the great Welsh preacher and teacher, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, began his epic series on the Epistle to the Romans in the mid-1950s, few could have imagined that fourteen years later he would still be expounding on it, and that he would eventually retire before finishing it. At that time, he became so deeply and exhaustively involved in his teaching that perhaps this outcome was almost inevitable. The depth and ease of communication were two very pronounced characteristics in Lloyd-Jones's ministerial career that allowed him, however, to explain this epistle in a way that, finally, everyone could fully understand it. Through the most outstanding Bible teacher of the 20th century, as many consider him, the ministry of the Holy Spirit completely changed the lives of the many people who used to attend his Friday night meetings in London. His "fervent logic" touched an inner depth, and listeners were never the same again. A Teacher even greater than Lloyd Jones himself said that the truth would make us truly free. It doesn't happen automatically, of course, nor magically. What our Lord meant was that understanding with the heart sets one free. In recent times, no one imparted such a clear concept of that bondage-breaking truth better than "the Doctor," as he was affectionately known.

Years later, he put that fourteen-year teaching series into writing. The result was a large number of printed pages collected in numerous highly acclaimed volumes, aimed at blessing countless more English-speaking people around the world. In a sense, this also created a double problem, since his series on Romans is a small library in itself and, therefore, is not accessible to most who communicate primarily in Spanish. Roy Davey, a fellow Welshman who was overwhelmed by all the teaching contained in those pages, wanted such valuable material to be available to a wider audience, so he undertook the task of synthesizing the content of the books. Here is the result: an easy-to-read, unrestricted volume for the Hispanic world. It contains jewels of truth that, when grasped, turn people into richer followers and more passionate worshippers of the triune God. This is the kind of believers the Lord seeks: those who, having truly seen His majesty and His amazing way of dealing with men, go out and do wonders in His name as an inevitable consequence of what they have understood. The author's desire, therefore, is that many will make this commentary an integral part of their daily lives, or, as he himself puts it in his prologue: "...as if it were your usual pajamas and part of your morning meditations," so that the God-glorifying deeds that spring from the depths of worship become the norm.
