A Serious and Timely Warning to All Saints in the Hour of Temptation (Puritan Writings Series)
From the pen of one of the most beloved Puritans, this peculiar treatise has been made available to God's people, addressing one of the most pressing and undoubtedly most necessary topics for our times: warning us about apostasy.
Throughout the centuries, apostasy has existed. Even in the times of the apostles, the apostasy of many was already present, as we see with the example of Demas, who loved this world; and in the same way, the apostle John tells us that some went out from us, showing that not all are of us (1 Jn. 2:19). And what can we say about that account in which the whole world was becoming Arian, and only a few faithful stood firm, such as the eminent theologian Athanasius, who confronted that multitude of apostates. Hence the phrase Athanasius Contra Mundum. And our writer writes these pages in a similar context in which England was undergoing religious decline, with many upheavals and critical situations. And he does so with great concern for the people of God, so that they remain firm in such situations.
Flavel provides us with eight particular pieces of advice for this purpose. Exposing the false worship of the Roman Catholic Church, rejecting the defilement of the world, spreading the purity of piety in our families and neighborhoods, etc., are some of the topics he offers us. And there is no doubt that each of these pieces of advice will be very useful for the people of God in this age of great confusion, licentiousness, apostasy, and cooling of Christians, so that we may awaken and live as God has called us to live.
