The nature of spiritual experience is probably the most interesting and difficult subject in Christian literature. It is interesting because it concerns human life at all observable stages, from infancy to death, and it embraces every possible emotion and behavior in a Christian. It is difficult because proper treatment of the subject places immense demands on the author. Tracing sanctification and backsliding, as they appear in human consciousness, presupposes a sound biblical theology, as well as a spirituality and pastoral knowledge broad enough to interpret all varieties of type that occur.
Archibald A. Alexander, "the Shakespeare of the Christian heart" as he was often called, was a pastor and preacher for over twenty years during a time of revival, and then served for over forty years as a professor at Princeton Theological Seminary.
