The book shows us what the call to follow Christ means. Bonhoeffer is concerned with what this reality might mean for all human estates. Starting from a biblical basis, he sees following Christ as the liberation of man from human precepts, from everything that oppresses and burdens, from everything that worries and torments the conscience. In following, men abandon the hard yoke of their own laws to take on the gentle yoke of Jesus. The full liberation of man to achieve communion with Jesus is only possible where Jesus' integral precept and his call to follow him unreservedly subsist.
