The Christian is not immune to pain, nor to the feeling of anguish and helplessness that can be experienced in the furnace of affliction. Like any other human being, they have to battle with depression and emotional exhaustion: the book of Psalms is proof of this; but unlike any other human being, the believer can effectively fight against such feelings, clinging to the "precious and very great promises" of their heavenly Father (2 Peter 1:4) and contemplating their trials in light of the eternal purpose of a wise, loving, and almighty God.
The sermons that make up this book are intended to encourage and comfort the weary and downhearted, so that they may continue to run the race until they reach their resting place.
