Selected Works of Augustine of Hippo Volume II

Within the PATRÍSTICA collection, the writings of Augustine of Hippo are one of its basic pillars. This Volume II of the three dedicated to Augustine's works is entirely dedicated to his autobiographical work, probably the most widely read and known, and the one that has most influenced society. His: Confessions, thirteen autobiographical books by Saint Augustine of Hippo written between 397 and 398.

Augustine writes his Confessions to make God known. Following the humility imposed by Christianity on human vanity, Augustine does not seek to glorify himself, but quite the opposite. His autobiography serves him to know himself by knowing God, and by knowing God, to know himself and others. Already a Bishop, a renowned orator and writer, to avoid praises for his gifts instead of the giver of those gifts, that is, God, Augustine sets out to write confessions that highlight the greatness of God and allow the reader to know Him in his weaknesses.

The Confessions are humanity's first attempt to approach itself, through paths of deep intimacy. Augustine discovers the prodigy and wonder of the human personality: God in man and man in God. For centuries, reading the Confessions was considered an essential requirement for any cultured person. And even today, they remain the best exposition of the contrast between human wickedness and incapacity for spiritual self-improvement; as opposed to the exaltation of divine grace and power that overcome this natural human resistance.
