Selected Works of Augustine of Hippo Volume I

Augustine of Hippo [353-429] is a unique phenomenon in the history of the Christian Church, admired and respected alike by Catholics and Protestants as the Champion of truth, against Manichaean, Arian, and Pelagian errors. Luther, referring to the Church Fathers, said: “Augustine pleases me more than all the others, because he taught pure doctrine and submitted his books, with Christian humility, to the Holy Scripture.” His theological and philosophical influence is still relevant. He appeals equally to reason, emotions, and will, and constitutes a clear source to which many turn after feeling weary of superficial Christianity.

Within the PATRISTICS collection, the writings of Augustine of Hippo are one of its basic pillars. This Volume I of the three dedicated to Augustine's works includes three fundamental writings from his literary production:

The True Religion. In "vera religione" Augustine proposes the search for transcendent truth, which leads him to adopt a more philosophical approach.

The Advantage of Believing. In "De utilitate credendi" he explains personal assent to faith, that wonderful reality that stands above illusion and foolishness; it is a more theological work.

The Enchiridion. In his "Enchiridion sive de fide, spe et caritate" (Handbook on Faith, Hope, and Charity), he covers the dogmatic and moral aspects of that revealed faith discovered through believing experience, which translates into worship of the true God, consisting of "faith working through love" (Gal. 5:6), the true spiritual principle around which all his thought revolves.

In all of them, Augustine addresses the most pressing issues of the time that resurface within Christianity again and again.
