Jonathan Edwards was one of the few truly great theologians of the English-speaking world, an intellectual and spiritual giant. When he began his ministry, New England had strayed from the Puritanism of its founders. Resisting the current, Edwards preached the whole counsel of God, and God clearly honored his testimony. Yet, on the surface, his life ended in tragedy; expelled from his pastorate by the people of Northampton, he died of fever at Princeton University, only two months after assuming the presidency. Edwards is perhaps best known as the theologian of revival, a subject on which he was uniquely qualified to write, due to his vast theological understanding and his firsthand experience of revivals. Of his various treatises in this field, Religious Affections is his "magnum opus."
The author's goal in this book is to distinguish between true and false religion by showing the marks of a saving work of the Holy Spirit in people. In his Preface, Edwards emphasizes the importance of employing "our greatest efforts to clearly discern... what true religion consists of." For "until this is done, it is to be expected that great revivals of religion will not last long." This work is considered one of the most important in Christianity.
