For many of us, the word itself already strikes terror into our hearts. It's not that we don't want to be physically, mentally, and spiritually disciplined. But the challenge seems too difficult, or the motivation has more to do with duty than desire. And when it comes to our Christian walk, we don't want to be legalistic and just obey a set of rules. It's not about that, is it?
Barbara Hughes responds with this encouraging reality: the true heart of spiritual disciplines is our relationship with God. As we grow in that relationship, embracing our Heavenly Father and His ways, we discover that disciplines are how we connect with Him. It is the way God gives meaning to our lives. When we discover that there is no greater purpose in our lives than to love God at all times, in every activity, and in every thought, the "terror" of a disciplined life is replaced by desires and expectations for a disciplined life.
