The Life of God in the Soul of Man was written in the 17th century by the Scottish minister Henry Scougal. It is a long letter, written to a friend who had lost his faith. Consequently, The Life of God in the Soul of Man is supportive, and its tone is one of friendship and love, denoting a true passion in Scougal's work. Being a letter, The Life of God in the Soul of Man is somewhat short. It is divided into three parts. In the first part, Scougal offers a tremendously instructive investigation into the true nature of religion. He addresses several poor conceptions about God and religion before moving on to true religion -- "the life of God in the Son of Man." In the second part, he explains the benefits of true religion. He focuses on the "excellence of divine love." God's love, he emphasizes, is a great love, worth having! However, in the third part, Scougal acknowledges the difficulties in following God. Therefore, he encourages reliance on divine help, and the contemplation of scripture in the development of a holy life. Although the writing is a bit antiquated, The Life of God in the Soul of Man is a journey through spiritual wisdom, which has served countless spiritual seekers.
"I knew not what true religion was, till God sent me this excellent treatise."
George Whitefield
"Ever since I had the happiness of knowing about this book, I have been heartily blessing God for the benefit it has brought to my soul, and I have earnestly wished that this precious book finds a place in every family."
Dr. Wishart, Principal of King's College, Edinburgh.
"John Wesley 'found' Henry Scougal's famous book. It is not a work on mystical theology, yet it contains the same general idea of a living and true knowledge of God. The book influenced not only Wesley, but also Whitefield and all the members of the Holy Club."
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
In the book THE LIFE OF GOD IN THE SOUL OF MAN, Henry Scougal cites ways to have a more intimate life with God, and shows facts and details that distance us from salvation and divine presence. He also talks to us about the errors of religion, what religion is, and very important points about the life we lead and how we should get rid of worldly things and how these distance us from God.
