Jonathan Edwards was the central figure of the First Great Awakening, a revival in the 1740s in New England, United States. Having been a renowned pastor in Northampton, Massachusetts, this move of God inspired Edwards' writings and paved the way for him to be one of the most recognized men of the revival. He passionately preached about the sovereignty of God, the sinfulness of man, the horrors of hell, and the necessity of a "new birth."
During the Great Awakening in New England, Jonathan Edwards witnessed both true and false signs of revival, as well as false and genuine conversions; this led him to write about these differences.
