The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment

Jeremiah Burroughs is rightly regarded as one of the leading English Puritan preachers. As such, he played a prominent role in the Westminster Assembly of Divines, but died prematurely before the Assembly's work concluded.

Burroughs' writings, some published before and some after his death, were numerous, but The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment is one of the most valuable of them all. Its author was greatly concerned to promote (1) peace among believers of diverse 'persuasions' (2) peace and contentment in the hearts of individual believers during what he describes as 'sad and shipwrecking times.'
The Rare Jewel focuses on this second objective. It is marked by sanity, clarity, aptness of illustration, and warmth of appeal to the heart. "There is an ark into which you can enter, and no man in the world can live as comfortable, cheerful, and contented a life as God's saints." Burroughs presses his lesson with all the fervor and forcefulness of a true and faithful minister of God.

JEREMIAH BURROUGHS (1600-1646), is one of the best-known English Puritans. He studied at Cambridge University where he was noted for his erudition and deep piety. He is the author of many books, among which are Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices, The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment, among many others.
