The following discourse contains the substance of several sermons preached to a private congregation. Some of those who heard these sermons, considering the matter treated and their purpose concerning the current state of affairs in this nation, judged that it would be convenient and opportune to make them public for the use and benefit of others. For they said that, although the land in which we live is full of sin and various signs of God's displeasure, there is an unwarranted neglect in calling its inhabitants to repentance to avert impending judgments. Even pagans, they said, with less evidence of the proximity of divine vengeance compared to what there is among us, always solemnly addressed their deities to ward it off. Therefore, this neglect among us is like a disease that the weakest and meanest effort for its relief could be of some use, and for this reason, I can but consider that this discourse be published.
