John Calvin and the Sufficiency of Scripture

Debates about the origin and nature of the Scriptures have accompanied the Church throughout history. However, no era saw controversies about the role of the Bible roar like the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation. With Luther's excommunication and the Council of Trent, the Roman Catholic Church defined its position on the Scriptures: they are part of God's special revelation, along with tradition.

As a voice of the Reformation, the theologian who best expressed the Protestant position was John Calvin in his Institutes of the Christian Religion, as well as in his commentaries. This brief study explores the multiple facets of his refined perspective which, convincingly, Calvin defines as "The Sufficiency of Holy Scripture."
