Josephus: The Essential Writings

This is a new translation and remarkable condensation that preserves Josephus' essential writings: "Antiquities of the Jews" and "The Jewish War." For the first time, readers will be able to fully understand, appreciate, and benefit from these classic works, which shed significant light on the Old and New Testaments. The text is easy to read and preserves the most important aspects of Josephus' writings. All significant passages are included, many of them word for word. Only non-essential or repetitive sections are omitted, and they are indicated in brackets within the text. Paul L. Maier's new adaptation includes:

• 83 photographs
• 12 maps and illustrations
• 5 genealogy and dynasty tables
• Marginal dates for significant events
• A comprehensive index
• A select bibliography
• The Loeb numbering system (the current standard for Josephus citations)

"Dr. Maier is an authority on Josephus and the first century of Christianity, as his previous publications attest. I am delighted to welcome this condensed edition that preserves the essence of Josephus. I warmly recommend it to all those interested in the study of the New Testament." F.F. Bruce
