Jonathan Edwards's importance in the English-speaking evangelical world is undeniable. Benjamin Schwarz describes Edwards as "America's most subtle, rigorous, and penetrating theologian." Jonathan Edwards is one of the greatest American thinkers from the time of the First Great Awakening or any other era. His line of thought was rooted in worship and steeped in a profound devotion, combining the old Puritan interest in doctrine with the new passion for deep experience favored by revival followers. These statements clearly reflect Edwards's importance.
However, even from non-evangelical backgrounds, Edwards is highly appreciated and acclaimed, for example, as one of the great philosophers America has produced. It is evident that he is also denigrated by many for being the preacher of America's most well-known and hated sermon: "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." But defending Edwards from the prejudices against him is not the central purpose of this book: "wisdom is justified by her children." Edwards, however, is little known in Latin America, primarily because few of his works have been translated into Spanish.
