An ancient confession of faith born within early Christianity, around the 1st century, is the title of this book. The first Christians who confessed and proclaimed Jesus Christ faced various persecutions and punishments from the dominant power of their time: the Roman Empire. Now, Justo González revisits the theme of the confession of faith from centuries ago, placing it in its historical context. For behind the confession are people who chose to live in perfect obedience to their Savior, accepting the difficulties that entailed.
In the first part of the book, the process by which Jesus becomes the Lord of the new Israel is presented and detailed; how his disciples, who initially did not believe in his resurrection, later recognized him as the Messiah.
The second section is dedicated to the era when the disciples of Jesus Christ came into contact with the Roman Empire, proclaiming their Master in the places they reached, and despite the persecutions ordered by various emperors, to the point of paying with their lives for their obedience to their Lord.
In the third part, the exposition focuses on the arduous task of theological-philosophical reflection that Christians had to undertake, as they faced the most varied philosophical currents of that time: Epicureanism, Neoplatonism, etc. Therefore, they had to respond to the attack of the most representative pagan philosophers of the era.
