A Brief History of Christian Thought

A new abridged edition of a well-known academic text worldwide. The fundamental objective is to provide educational institutions with a more concise and manageable work to use as a textbook. The complete edition is still available, which means that in specific cases, students can always visit the library and consult it for more information.

But it also aims to provide believers in general with a more concise and accessible work that provides them with precise information on the historical evolution of major doctrines in the Christian Church without having to read hundreds of pages.

Structured in three parts: I From the Beginnings to the Council of Chalcedon; II Medieval Theology; and III From the Reformation to the Present Day; the purpose of this work, as expressed by the author himself, is: "to serve as an introduction to the history of Christian thought for all those who are interested in it because they are part of it, because they too are Christian leaders and thinkers" so that "everything our ancestors in the faith thought and said may help us in some way to be more faithful and obedient in the time we have been given to live."

But also to help combat the false claim, so widespread in some evangelical circles, that the present action of the Holy Spirit makes the study of what has happened within the Church over the last twenty centuries unnecessary; and the pretension of certain evangelical groups insistent on linking their denomination or group directly to the apostolic church, denying all historical continuity and minimizing, or even completely disregarding the historical development of the Church, both in terms of its sociopolitical events and the development of its thought and theological vision.

We are, therefore, before an academic text of great pedagogical value, which fully and chronologically covers, over a thousand pages, the history and development of Christian thought. Starting from the apostolic age; continuing with the early Church; the thought of the so-called Fathers, controversies with heresies, Councils, the Middle Ages or "dark age," the Reformation and its ramifications; up to the 20th century, with European theologians: Barth, Bultmann, etc.; theological currents in the United States; new directions in Catholic theology; and Third World theologies.
