Christian Heroes: Then & Now: Mary Slessor (Bold Adventure)

Mary Slessor pondered David Livingstone’s words, "I care not where we go, so long as we go forward." "I am not going anywhere," Mary reflected. "I am twenty-seven years old. I work in a textile factory twelve hours a day. Oh God," she prayed, "send me somewhere, anywhere, as long as I can be a missionary."

 

God was certainly going to answer the prayer of this fiery, red-haired Scot. For thirty-nine years, Mary Slessor would demonstrate her love for the unreached, sometimes treacherous tribes of Africa's Calabar region. Facing illness, danger, and death on all sides, Mary became a beloved "White Ma" to entire tribes. Her faith, perseverance, and pioneering spirit provided her beloved adopted people with the first clear and resounding example of the life and freedom found in Jesus. Mary Slessor's life is the undying epic feat of a woman who stopped at nothing to reach the lost with the life-giving gospel of Christ.
