Christian Heroes of Yesterday and Today: Elizabeth Fry (Advocate for the Destitute)

Upon discovering the horrific conditions in which the prisoners and their children lived, Elizabeth Fry committed herself to improving the lives of the most desperate people in society, something no one else had dared to do. After replying to doubters, "If I don't do it, who will?", Betsy became one of England's greatest reformers and one of the most beloved figures of the 19th century. Guided by her Quaker values, she directed her efforts toward improving education, advocating for social justice, reforming prisons, and, alongside figures like William Wilberforce and Thomas Fowell Buxton, abolishing slavery (1780-1845).
