Hunger for God

Our appetites dictate the direction of our lives; whether it’s the cravings of our stomach, the passionate desire for possessions or power, or our spiritual love for God. But for the Christian, hunger for anything other than God can be an archenemy, while our hunger for God, and for Him alone, is the only thing that provides us with victory.

Do you feel that hunger for Him? As John Piper says: “If you don't feel a mighty hunger for God to manifest His glory, it is not because you have drunk and are full. It is because you have been nibbling too long at the table of the world. Your soul is stuffed with small things, and there is no room for the great things.” If we are full of what the world offers, then perhaps fasting expresses, or even increases, our soul's appetite for God.

Between the dangers of self-denial and self-indulgence we find the path of pleasant pain called fasting. This is the path that John Piper invites you to walk in this book. Because when God is the supreme hunger of our heart, He will be supreme in all things. And when you are most satisfied in Him, that is when He will be most glorified in you.
