Eschatology: The Christian Hope

The work of theologian Leopoldo Sánchez focuses on eschatology, or the teaching about the "last things." It deals with what is chronologically last—the end of history—and what is teleologically last—that is, what gives purpose to life. For the Christian who recognizes that present reality is not always aligned with God's will, the content of eschatology is the hope that the world can be better than it is now. Sánchez argues that this hope is not a dream or fantasy, but a trust in someone, in the person of Jesus Christ through whom the kingdom of God is manifested in our world. Christian eschatology, therefore, maintains the balance between the fulfillment of God's promises in Christ and by the Spirit in the here and now, and the complete realization of the divine plan in the future. Without denying that life and mission—defeating sin and triumphing over evil and death—constitutes the hope of Christian life, Sánchez shows how salvation is enjoyed in daily life while also directing us towards a better future.

The author deserves recognition for presenting such a controversial topic through a serious encounter between currents such as liberation and kingdom theologies, Hispanic cultural experience, and the Evangelical Lutheran tradition. This book is a great contribution to theological discourse, not only in the Hispanic world, but throughout the entire world. I totally and wholeheartedly recommend it to every reader!
