A Representation of the Dignity and Duty of the Believer: 7 (Puritan Writings Series)

Based on 1 Corinthians 3:17: "The temple of God is holy, which temple you are," Watson unfolds the dignity and duty of the believer as the temple of God, providing, as is his style, an enormous number of similarities, comparisons, metaphors, etc., in such a way that it leaves an imprint on the believer regarding this teaching.
Regarding the structure of this writing, first, on the exposition of the doctrine, he presents analogies between the soul of the believer and the temple in the Old Testament.

Subsequently, he moves on to applications. First, he informs believers about their dignity, their difference from the wicked, the assurance of a nation by protecting these spiritual temples, and how dangerous it is to harm the believer.

Second, he rebukes those who are more concerned with beautifying the body while neglecting the soul, thus urging them to pursue holiness.

Third, he urges examination as to whether we are truly temples of God, and he does this by urging us to observe ourselves to see if we bear a likeness to God in different aspects.

Fourth, he exhorts believers not to defile themselves by having communion with the wicked, giving in to the desires of the flesh, and embracing the errors of heretics. In particular, Watson elaborates on the errors and character of papism or the Roman church, delivering a lethal blow in this regard to those who profess the Roman religion. Furthermore, he exhorts each believer to dedicate themselves to those things that had to be done in the temple in the Old Testament—such as the sacrifice of prayer, of a broken heart, and of praise—and to consider the holiness that must be in them.

Finally, he comforts believers with the notion of God dwelling in them, and that in the end, they will be glorious temples.
