When the apostle Paul wrote “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23), he presented us with something of an enigma. For, in fact, a man does not die (in the ordinary sense of the word die) as soon as he sins, nor is it possible to recognize the connection that exists with his sin even later - when death occurs. We can say, of course, that it is spiritual death, but what are we to understand by that term? In view of such uncertainties, it may be useful to re-examine the New Testament teaching on the subject of death.
