About the author:

John Owen (1616-1683) was a prominent figure in the history of Protestantism and Puritan theology. Born in Stadhampton, Oxfordshire, Owen studied at the University of Oxford, where he completed his Master of Arts in 1635. During the English Civil War, he sided with Parliament and became an influential advisor and chaplain to Oliver Cromwell. His role in the university and in English political life underscores his influence during that period. Owen was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford in 1652, a position he held until 1657. During his tenure, he promoted educational reform and strived to raise the academic and spiritual level of the university. His leadership at Oxford was fundamental to the development of a generation of Puritan leaders who would continue to influence the church and British society.
