CTC9 Are miraculous gifts for today? (with imperfects)

How does the Holy Spirit act in today's churches? Does he perform miraculous healings, give prophecies, and messages in tongues? Does he grant Christians new power to minister when they experience “the Baptism of the Holy Spirit” after conversion? Does he cast out demons when Christians command it?

Or, perhaps, are these things relics of a distant past, from the time when the New Testament was being written and the apostles were alive, leading, teaching (and performing miracles) in the churches?

Among evangelicals today, there is little consensus on the answer to these questions. Many Pentecostals say that Christians should seek to be baptized by the Holy Spirit after conversion, and that this experience will result in new spiritual power for ministry. Other evangelicals, however, respond that they have already been baptized by the Holy Spirit, because it happened at the moment they became Christians. Who is right? What are the arguments for each position?

Is there a middle ground among this set of questions and different views? The first step must be to clearly define what the main viewpoints are in the evangelical world. If all we do is achieve this goal, we will have already accomplished something valuable. But what are the main positions?
