CTC21 Commentary on the Book of Revelation

The value of Mounce's commentary lies in the fact that after making a brief reference to the main interpretations, he provides a true analysis with an academic approach, but written in language accessible to all. It is a high-level, yet readable, commentary on Revelation. He interacts with a diversity of other scholars, exposing multiple interpretations and conceptions, but always ensures that the reader clearly understands his personal position, preventing them from getting lost in the debate and becoming somewhat confused, which often happens in other academic commentaries.

He avoids wasting excessive time searching for sources. While he assumes that John finds his documentary basis in other writings of the Hebrew Bible, such as Ezekiel and Daniel, and that there is abundant parallel material in Jewish apocalyptic literature, he assumes that if the apostle begins by saying: "The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him" (1:1), it is because he received it that way.

He reads Revelation within its cultural context and accepts that the primary purpose is to strengthen believers overwhelmed by the harsh persecutions unleashed by Rome, making it clear to them that the slain Lamb had been made Lord of history. But he also understands that John's predictions will find their final and full fulfillment in the last days of history yet to come. In his opinion, this combination between the present and the future in John's visions is entirely consistent with all other prophecy in the New Testament. He declares himself a premillennialist, but clearly expresses his appreciation and deepest respect for those who hold other views.

As is customary in the commentaries of the series, all the critical apparatus and grammatical and linguistic analysis of the Greek text are separated from the main exposition and included in footnotes.
