The central argument of this book is that everything that has to do with the person, namely: soul and spirit, mind and body; as well as their social environment, needs to be spiritually renewed by the grace of God, so that our will, conduct, and vision for the future may be transformed into the likeness of Christ.
"Without a clear theological understanding, an adequate ontology, and a correct anthropology, religion always degenerates into superstition or legalism, and often both."
So that this does not happen, the purpose of this book: Renew Your Heart is to provide these accessible theological, ontological, and anthropological foundations for any Christian.
Our churches are full of believers who speak very lightly of "soul," "spirit," "heart," "will," etc., without having the slightest idea of what it means. Willard explains this exactly in the pages of this book, clarifies the meaning of each of these terms, and provides a new philosophical vision, but based on the Bible, of how our inner being can be transformed by the grace of God into the likeness of Christ. We were "de-formed," we have been "re-formed," but our goal is to be "trans-formed," and the objective of this work is to help us in the process.
Although the book is basically for leaders, it is also intended for study groups and discipleship classes, and for this purpose there are questions at the end of each chapter to aid personal or group reflection.
