Retrieving Classical Trinitarian Theism

WHAT IS THE GOD WE WORSHIP LIKE?

Craig Carter presents the biblical and theological foundations of classical Trinitarian theism. Carter, a prominent Christian theologian known for his provocative defenses of classical approaches to doctrine, critiques the recent trend to modify or reject classical theism in favor of modern “relational” conceptions of God. The book includes a brief history of Trinitarian theology from its patristic origins to modern times, and a final appendix offers a brief summary of classical Trinitarian theology. This is one of the most important books on classical Trinitarian theism published in recent times.

“Far from putting God in a neat little box, the orthodox doctrine of God shatters our idolatrous tendencies and contemplatively alerts us to a better path found in Sacred Scripture. Against the mythologies of modern scientific study (even in their supposedly evangelical forms), Carter directs our gaze upward to the mysteries of faith, outward to learn from the communion of saints, and forward to the never-ending call to exegesis of the Word of God.”
Michael Allen

“For decades evangelicals have absorbed relational theism and assumed it is consistent with biblical testimony. Craig Carter exposes this flawed assumption, revealing the radical inconsistency of social Trinitarianism with Scripture’s own presentation of the Triune God.”
Matthew Barrett

“We have much to learn from Carter’s wonderful description and celebration of the biblical and theological merits of classical Trinitarian theism. Carter writes with eloquence and humility, leading the reader to a surprising depth of the universal church’s confession of the transcendent and sovereign Lord. Few books lead one to worship as openly as Carter’s, calling us to abandon superficial relational portrayals of God in favor of delighting in God’s extraordinary greatness.”
Christopher Holmes, Associate Professor of Systematic Theology, Head of Theology Program, School of Arts, University of Otago
