“Typology,” writes José M. Martínez in his Biblical Hermeneutics, “can be defined as the establishment of historical connections between certain facts, people, or things (types) of the O.T. and similar facts, people, or objects of the N.T. (antitypes)…”

The entire ceremonial system and civil laws given by God to Israel and compiled in the O.T. are full of such types, which have their counterpart and fulfillment in the N.T. The book of Hebrews, for example, explains how the animals offered on the altar represent Christ sacrificing himself on our behalf on Calvary to save humanity. The furniture and utensils of the tabernacle and the temple, together with the inherent rites, prefigure the Lord and his redemptive work.

In Conociendo a JesĂşs en el A.T.: CristologĂa y TipologĂa BĂblica (Knowing Jesus in the O.T.: Christology and Biblical Typology), Prof. Eugenio Danyans de La Cinna, well-known in the world of Christian literature for his biblical research, provides a compilation, structured into six sections, of complete studies on all the types and antitypes that present a character as a symbolic figure of Christ:

  • Personal types: Adam, Abel, Noah, Melchizedek, Isaac, Joseph, Moses, the Angel of the Lord…
  • Types in the Tabernacle: The measurements, materials, structure, artisans, the lampstand, the table, the altars, the veils…
  • Types in the priestly garments: the Breastplate, the Ephod, the Robe, the Embroidered Tunic, the Turban, and the Sash…
  • Types in the cultic offerings: The burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering for transgressions…
  • Types in the religious offerings: Passover, Unleavened Bread, Firstfruits, Pentecost, Trumpets, Atonement, Propitiation, Tabernacles…
  • Types in events and objects: Noah’s Ark, the Manna, the Rock of Horeb, the Bronze Serpent…

With numerous explanatory tables and graphics included for better understanding, and enriched monographic studies as appendices on fascinating topics such as Where is the Ark of God? or Differences between the praise of angels and the song of the redeemed, this book is a valuable tool for both expository preaching and personal or group Bible study.

Eugenio Danyans de La Cinna is passionate about the Bible. And he is also a good explorer of the Scriptures. Today, for some, it might seem like a cliché to still choose an Old Testament Christology as a working thesis, which, as the author says, is an expository commentary on Messianic Typologies. But the importance of a doctrine can be valued by the prominence given to it in the biblical canon. And so, we see that Typologies show us Christ prefigured throughout all the Old Testament Scriptures.

However, many studies were carried out throughout the last century, and undoubtedly will be carried out during our 21st century, on the incomparable Person of Jesus of Nazareth. But now, our common brother in faith, Danyans, presents this book very opportunely, because in these times when Bible study seems to be reserved for Seminaries or Biblical Institutes (since Bible study, for many, is not as precious as it once was), it is necessary to emphasize that when one studies the Bible with the heart, one should fall in love with it, with its content, with the discoveries revealed in its sacred pages, since through its reading and meditation, the believer finds many more reasons to love it, to obey it, and to love the Lord of the Bible more.

Each section of Danyans’ book develops systematically. By biographically exploring each biblical character studied, every detail of the Tabernacle furniture, every piece of the priestly garments, the Levitical offerings, the religious festivities of Israel, the great historical events… the author unfolds his study, revealing characteristic aspects that present the Lord Jesus in such a way that the reader will realize that they will come to know the Person and Work of Christ better, and much more than before.

And it is that when one has read the Bible many times, and has studied it deeply, more and more instructive things are revealed that make us understand the wonders that emerge from reading the Book of God. Personally, I believe that anyone who delves into this research work by brother Danyans will spend a very pleasant devotional time within its pages, especially by cross-referencing its content with an open Bible. In a word: they will greatly enjoy reading it.

I am especially thinking of those young people in our churches who are starting to read books they had never been able to consult before because they lacked them. And surely, reading this book, besides attracting their attention, will open their minds and they will learn the valuable teachings of the Old Testament Typologies about the Lord Jesus Christ, whom they will see reflected in every detail of Messianic projection that our author mentions in the respective sections that form the structure of this volume.

And it is that our understanding of Christ will undoubtedly be enriched by the study of biblical typologies, and evidently, this enrichment will exert a notable influence on every believer, as it will help us to understand that, in its proper prophetic perspective, the Bible truly reveals Christ in every typological detail, as our author amply explains.

It is something that transcends the purely human and that will, without a doubt, be necessary to know to understand, in its full scope, the profound meaning of the Messianic Typologies of the Old Testament. With best wishes and a warm embrace from your sincere admirer, Antonio M. Sagau
