The Regulative Principle and Necessary Parts of the Church’s Corporate Worship.
I have taught courses on worship for over two decades at seminary only to find resistance to the idea that God regulates how corporate worship should be performed. Even those most committed to biblical and doctrinal accuracy suddenly become relativists when public worship is discussed. Enter Sam Waldron! How should we worship on Sunday? Dr. Waldron’s answer is biblical, reasonable, systematic, and (at times) hard-hitting. Are there arguments for the regulative principle of worship? Read this book and find out. —Derek W. H. Thomas
In the environment of worship wars that have taken place in the last three to four decades, Dr. Sam Waldron’s biblical and sanctified reasoning voice calls out to the church today. With a masterful grasp of the Holy Scriptures and a keen understanding of the religious landscape, the reader is given a balanced and thorough formula for worship, coming from both the Old and New Testaments. It must be carefully noted that the Triune God does NOT want worship of any type or kind!, but one that is acceptable (see Heb. 12:28-29). I heartily recommend the book titled, How Then Should We Worship?, which will instruct us well on how to worship God acceptably. —Earl M. Blackburn
Bottom line, I would like to use this text in a seminary level course, but also for teaching in the local church. It is very enjoyable and thorough. You will be well instructed, challenged, perhaps corrected, or maybe reaffirmed by this book. But you will have to read it to find out! As Dr. Waldron might ask, “Are you open to it?” This is a much-needed work today for clarity between positions, for the hope of greater unity in Christ’s local church, and for a more irenic and civilized debate between the parties involved... For God’s glory alone. —Pastor Fred A. Malone
