Considered the quintessential commentary among all Old Testament commentaries, constantly cited by all other commentators, linguists, and Bible scholars, the "Biblischer Commentar über das Alte Testament," a masterful work of philological research carried out by Johann Friedrich Carl Keil and Franz Julius Delitzsch, is universally recognized as the most complete, serious, and scholarly work ever written on the Old Testament. And the best way to approach the complexity of the original meaning of the words used in the Hebrew text.

It has maintained its leadership among commentaries and its prestige as an indispensable work for biblical study and research since its appearance in Germany in 1872. Translated into English a few years after its publication in German, it has been constantly reissued to this day and is present not only in the libraries of all seminaries and theological institutions in the English-speaking world, but also on the study desks of most clerics, pastors, and Bible scholars.

Its main virtue consists of carrying out a profound philological analysis of every important word in every important Old Testament text, within its context, and in an accessible way for those who do not master or even have no knowledge of Hebrew.

To this end, Keil and Delitzsch base their exegesis on a direct translation from the Hebrew of each passage to be commented on, then seeking textual support in ancient translations, such as the Septuagint and the Vulgate. Then, they analyze that text in light of the use and meaning given to that Hebrew word in other passages of the Bible. Afterwards, they include in their research discoveries made in scientific documentary areas related to Old Testament exegesis, such as history and archaeology. And they complete their commentary, in many cases, by presenting the interpretation of that text or word by the Church Fathers and Reformers.

The present Spanish edition, being a direct translation of the original German in its third edition, offers significant advantages over the various English editions, which are based on the second. In addition to including valuable revisions and expansions by the authors, it also includes the Spanish translation of the numerous Latin citations, both from the Church Fathers and Reformers and from other ancient texts, something that was not taken into account in either the German editions or the successive English editions, and which, unfortunately, excludes all those who do not master that language from accessing the full richness of the commentary.
