Old Testament Commentary: Exodus

In Exodus we find the edifying revelation of the Lord God in His power and patience, tenderness and redemption, and in His inflexible insistence on honoring His word and keeping His promises. In the story as it is told here, our ancient brothers, sisters, and fathers in the Israel of God knew Him, in their time, as their Redeemer in slavery who keeps His covenant, the Angel of the Lord, their divine companion on their pilgrimage, and the One who is Holy dwelling in the midst of their camp and sharing their ground. And He is still the same, for He does not change.

This book emphasizes the holy nature of God in the face of human sinfulness; it explains the meaning of blood and sacrifice; it is a book of mercy that descends from Heaven and of law that teaches redeemed sinners how to live on heavenly terms. In Genesis we can already glimpse some of these great biblical truths, but in Exodus they are brought together, taking on a form and definition that will no longer be altered anywhere else in the Bible. In a simple form and, according to many, a fascinating story, Exodus reveals fundamental truths and is, in fact, one of the great pillars of the Bible.
