Amos is the prophet of simplicity, called to confront the sophistication of a kingdom that had obtained its independence by separating what God had united. Israel was a prosperous nation when this prophet denounced its infidelity to the covenant. The king had organized a false religion full of external ostentations that earned God's and the prophet's contempt.
Amos is the prophet of God's plumb line, and every building or kingdom that has been built without His guidelines will be torn down. He is a strong, seasoned, vigorous, direct prophet, skillful with comparisons. May the Lord use this commentary to stir our understanding of what "prophetic work" means in our time.
