Commentary on Proverbs

The Christian loves the word of God because he loves God. Therefore, the discerning Christian likes to expose himself to the meditations of men of God who have known the Scriptures very well, who draw from their treasure the riches of biblical wisdom, making such riches available for the benefit of others.

George Lawson was one of these faithful guides. It has been said of this pastor and teacher of old (1749 - 1820) that he had memorized almost the entire Bible in English, in addition to substantial portions of the scriptures in their original languages (Hebrew and Greek).

Charles Haddon Spurgeon spoke of Dr. Lawson's fertile mind, the simplicity of his style, and his sensitivity to the human side of truth as well as to its divine side.

A contemporary of Lawson described his writings in this way: "they reveal throughout a thorough knowledge of the Bible and of the human heart; and reflect a deep concern to benefit the reader."

The Bible Commentary on the book of Proverbs is very useful for teaching every believer to live according to the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ, according to the wisdom that comes from above (James 3:15, 17). It also appeals to unbelievers with moving pleas.

Since Proverbs has particular relevance for parents in their instruction to their children, Lawson's Commentary on Proverbs will be helpful for family worship.

Dr. Lawson himself recommends the biblical Proverbs with these words: "Here is milk for babes and solid food for those of full age. Here are plain instructions for the ignorant, and depths of wisdom to enrich and exercise the minds of the most intelligent. Let us pay attention, learn, and practice."
