Features of this edition:
Complete text – This edition contains a complete translation of The Baptist Catechism as it appears in the 1695 facsimile edition. In this edition you will find an imitation of the original cover translated into Spanish, the 114 questions and answers, and the notice to the reader found at the end of the 1695 edition.
Italicized phrases – Due to the distance between the two languages, in some cases we were forced to add words to the text so that the original phrases would have a clear meaning for the reader. For this reason, in order to present a complete and faithful translation, we have italicized the words that do not appear in the original text. Likewise, we have used a different font for words or phrases that are italicized in the original text (for example: "You shall have no other gods before me"). In this way, the reader will be able to read the text with confidence, having a way to differentiate what belongs to the original text from what we have added to preserve the meaning of the original phrases.
Aids for the reader – This edition contains an introduction written by Dr. James M. Renihan which presents a wonderful overview of the catechism, including its purpose, origin, structure, and the tools that can be used to get the most out of its content. We also added an appendix written by Dr. Corey W. Johnson called "Forming the Next Generation," with the purpose of motivating pastors, teachers, and Christian parents to use catechisms in preaching the Gospel and instructing others.

The Baptist Catechism is an extremely valuable supplement to the 2LBCF, and should be regularly consulted as a kind of cross-reference of theology. The Westminster Assembly recognized the potential benefits of the old method of teaching and simplifying theology through memorization of questions and answers, and the Baptists followed their example. B. B. Warfield tells us that one of the authors of the
Westminster Shorter Catechism (the document on which our Catechism is based) said that “they tried to write in this not the knowledge that the child has, but that which he ought to have.” The Assembly drafted two catechisms. The Larger Catechism is a detailed learning resource for theology, but more famous is the Shorter Catechism they published. The Puritan pastor Thomas Vincent said, “I know no catechism that is more full of light and sound doctrine,” and he was not the only one to evaluate it this way. Our Baptist fathers recognized the profound benefit found in its careful expressions, and knew that it could be of great benefit in their own churches.
