When observing the life of Jonah, we discover something as perplexing as it is true: we can obey without changing. We could tell others about God's love without feeling love for others. We could do spiritual things without being a spiritual person. We could change our behavior externally without our deepest desires changing.
Unfortunately, many times change is seen simply as a transformation of our behavior. I change when I no longer yell at my spouse. I change when I stop consuming pornography... I change when I turn off the television and start reading the Bible... I believe that the result of real change brings about a change in behavior; but at the same time, real change is something much deeper than that. It is not just about stopping something bad and starting to do something good.
It is experiencing a transformation of my deepest desires. It is changing my dreams, my hopes, my ambitions, my passions. It is changing what my heart enjoys. And as a result of that change, changing the way I live.
How do we change like that? That is the challenge of this book.
