About the Author:
John Rippon (1751-1836) was an English Baptist pastor. The Lord saved him when he was about sixteen years old. At twenty-one, he became the successor to the great Dr. Gill in London. Although he did not have the talent or erudition of his predecessor, he was bold and wise in speech, and his administration of church affairs was characterized by great prudence. He was a great friend of missions, and his church donated large sums to national and foreign Baptist missionary societies. In 1787 he published an important hymnal commonly known as Rippon's Selection of Hymns, which was very successful and was reprinted 27 times in over 200,000 copies.
