Brief History of Ministerial Preparation

There is no doubt that ministerial preparation is in crisis. There are many indications of this, but it is worth paying attention to some of them.

In view of this, Dr. Justo L. González's proposal in A Brief History of Ministerial Formation is to look back at the past of ministerial development, to see if there is anything that can serve as a guide for our response to the challenges of the present.

And to show that much of what today seems perfectly natural and even necessary for the life of the church — for example, seminaries — was not always so, and there may possibly be other ways of doing things. That is, knowing the past frees us from falling into the same errors, whose continuation is often presented to us as the only possible alternative.

Thus it is necessary to explore the past of ministerial preparation, to see if there are elements that can serve as a guide or inspiration for building the present, with a view to the future.
