Salvation is presented in the Bible as the "renewal of our understanding" through the knowledge of God in Christ, and the true knowledge of oneself to return to Christ and not "be conformed to this world" (Romans 12:2). Both believers and non-believers frequently hold low perspectives of God and consequently, light perspectives regarding sin and Scripture. Instead of perceiving God as "the Most High," they want to make Him a servant to "the highest" man. This low view of God is reflected in their attitude towards God, towards Scripture, and towards themselves.
The attitudes of the heart define us: what we think, what we desire, and what motivates us. Attitudes such as the fear of God, humility, love, and gratitude are works of God's grace that He incorporates into believers as they receive from the Scriptures the self-revelation of God's nature and majesty in His saving work. Thus, grace is required on God's part, and also work on our part to believe what God teaches us and to think according to His Word, being transformed in mind and heart, to honor Him in our way of thinking and acting. In this way, we will also be able to discern the erroneous philosophies of the world's worldview.
