The Mortification of Sin

This book is a summary of the work by the Puritan John Owen, first published in 1656, titled On the Mortification of Sin. It was part of a trilogy of works by the same author on the topics of temptation to sin; the mortification of sin; and the sin that dwells in us. For many pastors and theologians today, these works remain, without a doubt, the best works in existence to help the believer in how to confront temptation and overcome sin in our lives.

The author tells us: “Regeneration does not annihilate sin completely but produces a change in our relationship with it, freeing us from its condemning power and slavery. Nevertheless, we must occupy ourselves throughout our lives with the mortification of the power of sin that still remains in us. When sin leaves us in peace, then we can leave it in peace. Sin is deceptive and knows how to pretend to be dead, when in reality it is still alive. Because of this, we must vigorously pursue it at all times until death. We must not provide it with anything that strengthens it or helps it to have strength, power, and vitality.”
