The author says: Kindness is beautiful, not only to receive it, but especially to give it. Is the teaching of kindness written in your heart? Do you practice kindness at any cost? Do you remember the parable of the Good Samaritan, the wonderful story of the despised stranger who helped the almost-dead victim of an assault? Jesus concluded with these words: "Go and do likewise."
"And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward" (Matthew 10:42).
How generous of the Lord to mention such an insignificant act: "only a cup of cold water"! I can do it, no matter that I am poor; I can do it, no matter my low salary; I can do it with joy. What seems so little, the Lord notices; He sees when it has been done for the least of His followers. Evidently, it is not the cost, nor the ability, nor the quantity that He looks at, but the motives: what we do for a disciple because he is a disciple, his Lord observes and rewards. He does not reward us for the merit of what we do, but according to the riches of His grace. Charles Spurgeon.
