John Bunyan was imprisoned in 1660 for preaching "without a license" in Bedford, England. In addition to writing his classic work, "Pilgrim's Progress," during his twelve years of continuous deprivation of liberty, Bunyan also learned that the only way to glorify God in his sufferings was to pray often and fervently. His thoughts and meditations on prayer were forged on the anvil of religious persecution, and while in prison he wrote: "Prayer is the opening of the heart and soul to God in a sincere, sensible, and affectionate manner."

Selected from among Bunyan's many reflections on prayer, this new collection of prayers has been edited for today's readers. Archaic expressions have been revised to present them in more contemporary language without destroying Bunyan's beauty and style, typical of the author's era. This book of readings for personal prayer time provides a better understanding of the nature of prayer and will enrich and deepen the reader's experience of prayer and God.
