Preaching, particularly in evangelical Christianity, is a pivotal phenomenon that encompasses the generality of its way of being, its mission, its theology, its ecclesiology, and its sociology. One only needs to glance at the extensive bibliography on the subject, the specialized journals, and the organizations dedicated to the study of preaching, to realize the tremendous importance of this topic in the evangelical world.

A change in the orientation of preaching, a slight shift in it, and the entire edifice is shaken from its foundations. The crisis of certain churches and denominations begins as a crisis of preaching.
