This work aims to achieve two purposes:

• To provide Bible students—in seminaries, institutes, and other biblical and theological training centers—as well as pastors and teachers of God's Word, an effective and updated tool for deepening or refreshing their biblical knowledge.

• To offer believers in general scholarly yet understandable material that can be grasped—without needing to be an expert—by anyone eager to learn about the sources of our faith, and thus answer the important question: "How did the Bible come to us?"

The eight chapters that make up the book correspond to the text of a series of conferences, organized in Spain by the UniĂłn BĂblica and given by specialist professors and doctors in each subject; some of them, considered world authorities in biblical sciences, regarding their respective topic. It is, therefore, a work that honors Hispanic letters and fills an important void in the field of scientific dissemination of the origins and reliability of the Scriptures.

True to its purpose of promoting systematic and meditative reading of the Bible among people of all ages, with the aim of fostering personal discipleship, Christian community, and social responsibility, the Unión Bíblica de Cataluña organized a series of lecture-discussions that were held in various churches in Barcelona at a rate of one or two per year, under the general title How did the Bible come to us?, with the desire to disseminate aspects of the formation, documentation, reliability, translations, theological content, and use of the Holy Scriptures.

The dissemination of these topics, some of which are only studied in institutes, biblical schools, and seminaries, but which were explained in an understandable way so that all of God's people interested in them could understand them, was well received at the time.

From the moment we planned the realization of the series of conferences, we clearly saw that the material we were producing would be of great help and blessing to other people, in addition to those who had attended the public events – not always crowded – and for this reason, we decided that we had to gather them in a book to give it a much wider dissemination.

The topics that make up the book, in which each chapter corresponds to the text of a conference, in some cases corrected and expanded later or expressly written in others, are in line with the UniĂłn BĂblica Statement of Faith, which concerning the Bible says:

“We believe that the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are inspired by God, as their authors spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit, hence they are completely trustworthy in all that they affirm; and thus they are our supreme authority in matters of faith and life.”

Now, UniĂłn BĂblica and Editorial CLIE are pleased to present this work to the Spanish and Latin American public, with the hope that it may be useful to Bible students in seminaries and other biblical-theological training centers, to pastors in their work of deepening the Word of God and recycling biblical knowledge, and to all readers of the Holy Scriptures who wish to know with more foundation how the Bible has come to us.

Finally, we want to thank all the professors and doctors who participated in the conferences and provided us with their texts for publication, as well as D. Pedro Pérez, responsible for organizing the events and preparing the materials within the framework of the Catalonia subcommittee of Unión Bíblica. To all of them, we say, with Saint Paul, that "their labor in the Lord is not in vain." Pedro Puigvert
